World Food Day is observed annually on 16th October. It celebrates the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1945. World Food Day promotes global awareness about hunger and food security and encourages action to build a world where every person has access to safe, nutritious, and aIordable food.

The theme of World Food Day 2026 is Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.

This theme captures both the challenges and opportunities facing Australia's agrifood sector. Innovation has become critical to ensuring a resilient, sustainable, and safe food supply for future generations with increasing pressure from climate change, resource constraints, supply chain disruptions, food security pressures, and evolving consumer expectations.

Innovation is about continually improving how our food is grown, processed, distributed, and regulated to ensure all consumers have access to safe, aIordable, and nutritious food.

Across the Australian agrifood sector, businesses are leveraging new technologies, advanced processing methods, digital traceability systems, and data-driven food safety programs to create new products, improve eIiciency, reduce waste, and meet changing consumer needs.

Grain producers are adopting precision agriculture, data analytics, and robotics to optimise yields while reducing inputs and costs. Dairy manufacturers are using advanced membrane filtration and processing technologies to create high-value nutritional ingredients. Food businesses are implementing digital traceability systems to strengthen food safety, and enhance consumer confidence.

Across industry and food businesses, research scientists and technologists are exploring the utilisation of alternative proteins, creating value out of food waste, designing sustainable packaging solutions that reduce environmental impact, and using artificial intelligence for advanced food safety monitoring.

AIFST believes scientific advancement underpins food safety and sustainability, positioning Australia's agrifood sector to meet the challenges of tomorrow while continuing to support consumers today.

Innovation is not simply keeping pace with change; it supports and strengthens our agrifood system and nourishes future generations.
