The Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care has commissioned Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) to build an Australian Branded Food Database (BFD). The Database will provide a central source of brand-specific information that will support and enhance Australia’s food regulatory system; by informing the development of food standards and public health and nutrition policy and initiatives.

FSANZ is running a workshop on the BFD during this early stage of development; to engage with stakeholders, and provide an update on the project and its timeframes. FSANZ will be seeking general and specific feedback from participants and participants will be given ample opportunity to ask questions.



Ms Christel Leemhuis

    General Manager, Science and Risk Assessment, FSANZ

    About: 

    Christel Leemhuis is the General Manager of Science and Risk Assessment at Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). Christel is a public health nutritionist and has worked in the food regulatory system for over 20 years for both government and the private sector. Christel is responsible for scientific and risk assessment functions of the agency that includes biological sciences and genetically modified foods, chemical safety (toxicology) and nutrition, food data and analysis (food composition and dietary modelling, international and strategic science activities, and chemical residue related activities.

    Ms Renee Sobolewski 

      Director, Food Composition Section FSANZ

      About: 

      Renee is a senior nutritionist with over 17 years experience in the food regulatory environment. She has managed the Australian Food Composition Program at Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) since 2008. Her team is responsible for supporting FSANZ standards development work, generating data through nutrient analysis and maintaining the national reference database on the nutrient content of Australian foods and online labelling tool the Nutrition Panel Calculator. She has experience developing datasets for estimating food, dietary supplement and nutrient intakes from national nutrition surveys and is working on developing an Australian Branded Food Database. She also has experience in the development of specialised IT systems for the upload, storage, analysis, compilation, calculation and reporting of food composition data.

      Ms Clare Bleys 

        A/g Deputy Director, Food Composition Section, FSANZ

        About:

        Clare Bleys has a background in food science and nutrition and has spent the majority of her career working for the Commonwealth Government in food policy and regulation.  Clare has more than 10 years’ experience supporting and leading government projects which have public-private partnerships at their core. Clare has recently joined Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) and the Food Composition Section and is supporting the development of Branded Food Database and FSANZ’s contributions to the Health Star Rating system.

        Mr Andrew Steele

          Director – Retail, GS1 Australia

          TOPIC: Utilising GS1 for FSANZ Branded Foods Database

          Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has partnered with GS1 Australia to support the development and implementation of the FSANZ Branded Food Database - a central source of food product information for food and beverages sold in Australia. 

          About: 

          Andrew is a leading industry expert and well respected supply chain professional with over 25 years’ experience in fast moving consumers goods and the food retail sector.

          Andrew currently leads the Retail and Marketplaces Team at GS1 Australia who are responsible for developing insightful initiatives to ensure the highest level of efficiency, safety, traceability and best practice in the Food and Beverage and wider retail sector. Andrew is an active member of a number of industry working groups in the retail grocery, liquor, meat and fresh produce sectors.

          Dr Geoffrey Annison

            Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Australian Food and Grocery Council

            About: 

            Dr Geoffrey Annison is Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Health, Nutrition and Scientific Affairs at the Australian Food and Grocery Council. He leads a team of experienced health, nutrition and scientific professionals that provide specialist services to members. To deliver high quality advice and industry resources that help members and the industry, he leverages his wide experience in food, regulation and innovation. Dr Annison has held a number of senior technical and management roles in Australia and overseas. This has included positions within the industry such as with Goodman Fielder, Australian Pork Pty Ltd and the Australian Wheat Board. Other academic roles with Massey University (New Zealand) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) give him deep technical knowledge of research and public policy. Dr. Annison has a Bachelor of Science in Food Technology and a PhD in Microbiology from the University of New South Wales. These skills and experiences enable him to understand current industry issues from a number of perspectives and to offer solutions and services that support AFGC members.
